What Is an ATV Bill of Sale?

An ATV bill of sale is a legal document when buying or selling an all-terrain vehicle. It serves as a more formal version of a receipt and highlights pertinent information regarding the sale. It typically includes the type of ATV sold, how much was paid for it, and more.

To make the ATV bill of sale official, the buyer and seller will both sign the document. They will then keep a copy for their records if any issues arise.

How To Write an ATV Bill of Sale

To come up with an ATV bill of sale, here’s what you have to do:

1. Download the ATV bill of sale template

Download a template of an ATV bill of sale for your convenience. These standard forms already have the usual contractual wording, but there are blank spaces that the buyer and seller can use to customize their transaction.

Note that not all states require an ATV bill of sale. However, some states mandate ATV owners to register their vehicles. In such cases, a bill of sale is one of the supporting documents that new owners will need. When you download the ATV bill of sale form, make sure the document conforms with your state’s guidelines.

2. Fill out the necessary information in the document

Every transaction is different, so you need to provide details of your sale. The top part of the document will ask for the date of the transaction. Then, the section titled “parties” will ask that the buyer and seller are identified on the form. Aside from their names, the ATV bill of sale will also need their current mailing addresses. In some cases, identification numbers are also required.

Another important detail is the purchase price. The ATV bill of sale must reflect the price that the buyer and seller agreed on. Additionally, the document must also mention the mode and terms of payment: Will it be paid in cash or via check? Is it a one-time payment or will it be paid in installments?

Whatever the parties agree on, the ATV bill of sale must reflect these details.

3. Provide ATV details

The ATV bill of sale will also ask for a description of the vehicle. You must specify its:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Manufacturing year
  • Color
  • Number of cylinders
  • Odometer reading
  • Title number (if any)
  • 17-digit vehicle ID number (VIN)

The VIN is located on the ATV but there is no uniform location for it. If you cannot find the VIN, you can always call the manufacturer for assistance.

4. Sign the ATV bill of sale

To make the ATV bill of sale official, both parties must agree to what’s written in the document. Their concurrence will be signified by their signatures. These are affixed next to their printed names and the date when the document was signed.

5. Keep a copy of the ATV bill of sale

The buyer and seller must have a copy of the document and keep it as proof of the transaction. For the buyer, the bill of sale will be necessary when they register the ATV (if the state requires it). Note that some states only require ATV registrations for vehicles that are used on main roads.
